Fieldtrip Zambia

From 4 April till 1 May 2014 researcher Kenneth Bauters carried out fieldwork in the Mutinondo Wildernes Area (Muchinga Province, Zambia), together with Kaj Vollesen and Sally Bidgood (Royal Botanic Gardens Kew) and Lari Merrett from the Mutinondo Wildernes Area.

Symposium “Botanic gardens in a changing world”

On 17 and 18 April 2015, Isabel Larridon and Chantal Dugardin attended the symposium “Botanic gardens in a changing world” to celebrate the 425th birthday of the Hortus Botanicus Leiden.

They gave a lecture: From school children to PhD research: integrating botanic garden collection in science and education.

Visiting scientist

From 16 March till 15 June 2015, Dr. Carmen Gloria Ossa from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago is visiting our research group to study the population genetics of Tristerix (Loranthaceae) and its host Echinopsis species (Cactaceae) in Chile.

New CeMoFE laboratory

Early January 2015, the Ghent University Centre for Molecular Phylogeny and Evolution (see also Other facilities) moved to another, renovated building of the Ledeganck complex. This move made the lab over twice as big as before, and will allow the five research groups active in the CeMoFE to work much more efficient. It will also allow us to grow and introduce novel techniques and provide space for new equipment.

Caribbean Magnolia project partner meeting in Cuba

30 November till 7 December 2014, researchers Emily Veltjen and Marie-Stéphanie Samain visited the Universidad de la Habana in Cuba, where they met with the Cuban partners of the Caribbean Magnolia project to organise and discuss the cooperation for the next four years.

Visiting scientist

During the month of August 2014, Rondro Ramananjanahary from Missouri Botanical Garden's Madagascar office visited our research group on a Global Taxonomy Initiative capacity building grant to study herbarium specimens and literature to help her write revisions of the genera Costularia and Eleocharis (Cyperaceae) for MBG's Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of Madagascar.

Lectures Ghent Festivities 2014 in 'Het Pand'

During the Ghent Festivities (Gentse Feesten), several lectures are organised by the Ethnographical Collections of the Ghent University (Etnografische Verzamelingen UGENT). Two staff members of the Research Group Spermatophytes gave lectures about recent field work (in Dutch).

3rd Science in Botanic Gardens Congress, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain

1-4 April 2014, researchers Isabel Larridon and Yannick De Smet visited Gran Canaria, where the 3rd Science in Botanic Gardens Congress was held. The congress was hosted by the Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo and organised in collaboration with Botanic Gardens Conservation International.

Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix

15-19 July 2013, researcher Isabel Larridon visited Desert Botanical Garden, a garden specialised in cacti and succulent plants in Phoenix, Arizona to collect samples for research and network with researchers associated to the garden.

Honorary PhD Sara Oldfield - Secretary General of Botanic Gardens Conservation International

17 May 2013, Ghent University handed out an institutional honorary doctorate to Sara Oldfield. This honorary doctorate is part of the Fascination of Plants Day, an initiative in which the Ghent University Botanical Garden and the Research Group Spermatophytes are strongly engaged.
