PLANT BIODIVERSITY & CONSERVATION

January 2012 to present

Worldwide about 20% of all plant species is estimated to be threatened with extinction, and the greatest threat to plant biodiversity is human induced habitat loss. Poor basic botanical knowledge of species limits the effectiveness of long-term plant biodiversity conservation. In order to enhance the fundamental knowledge concerning their biodiversity and to inform and prioritise conservation actions, several research projects are ongoing at the Research Group Spermatophytes focussing on Cactaceae, Hydrangeaceae and Magnoliaceae. Important collaboration partners are Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and the Instituto de Ecología (INECOL), Mexico.
